Who we are?
SEIBO MARIA ECOSYSTEM RESEARCH CENTRE LTD
SMERC is a consortium of scientists from varied disciplines/backgrounds (Eco-physiologists, Silviculturists, Agro-foresters, Soil Scientists, Geneticists, Socio-Economists, and Engineers). The consortium is a legally registered entity based in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
SMERC is into research and development with our research being primarily into agriculture, forestry and other land- uses (AFOLU), and climate change. These activities cover ecosystem services, carbon accounting, natural forest, and plantation management, climate change adaptation, mitigation, and climate resilience among other interventions.
Our Mission
To generate, communicate and implement existing and new technologies from research findings to optimize forests, agricultural lands and other land use types for climate change mitigation and sustainability.
OUR Vision
To be a leading Research Centre that envisions and influences a world where climate change is mitigated, degraded lands are efficiently restored and regenerative agriculture is adopted, leading to a balanced ecosystem that benefits biodiversity conservation and carbon stock enhancement.
OUR goals
- To restore degraded lands impacted by climate change, poor agronomic practices, and/or natural disasters with a focus on resilience, sustainability, and equity to ensure biodiversity conservation and carbon stock enhancement
- To pursue regenerative agriculture for the restoration and conservation of farmlands and their ecosystems
- To provide a platform for the field-based practical training of post-graduate students in climate change issues in the AFOLU sector
- To pursue outreach programs in basic schools on environmental issues.
- To foster long-term collaborative partnerships with local organizations, governments, and stakeholders.
